First of all: What is a NIE number?

A NIE number is a registration Number which Spanish Foreign Departments give to each person who comes to live or who wants to do business in Spain.
The NIE number is called in Spanish: “Número de Identificación para Extranjeros” (Foreigners Identification Number)

For nearly any application you plan to do in Spain, they will ask for your NIE number. Starting with the simple act of opening a Bank account in Spain – the employer of the bank will directly ask you for your NIE number.

Same happens when you want to register a company in Spain. We also offer the service of incorporation of Spanish companies, and we started to offer the service of registering a Spanish NIE Number, because the Spanish public notary is not allowed to sign any public document, such as buying or selling a house, or the incorporation of a Spanish limited company. You also need to show to the public notary (the “notario”), besides your valid passport, your Spanish NIE number. As an additional service, we offer our clients, who plan to do business in Spain and want to incorporate a Spanish S.L. company, the service of applying for their NIE number in Spain. We were searching for the fastest and most efficient way to obtain the Spanish NIE number and, luckily, we did find the best way: we can get, for clients of any nationality, the Spanish NIE number in less than 24 hours!

Specially for people whose nationality is from outside the European Union, it is very difficult (and sometimes even impossible) to obtain a Spanish NIE number. We did have clients who did apply for themselves for the Spanish NIE number and, after getting it denied from the Spanish Foreign Department, they came to us, and we made them very happy in the moment we called them informing them about their personal NIE number was ready. At the same day we sent them a copy of their NIE number by email, and posted the original NIE-Certificate.

Unfortunately there is a big difference in where, when and how you apply for your NIE number: It is not the same bureaucratic procedure in every Spanish city, and unfortunately, in many police stations of the “Policía Nacional”, where there is a foreigner department responsible for issuing NIE numbers, they are very selective in who they give a NIE number and who not.

And for sure they will not issue the NIE number the same day, meaning that most applicants stay for many hours in a queue with many other non-Spanish residents, and when their turn finally arrives and they manage to fill the application Form for a Spanish NIE number, then they get the information to call a special number a few weeks later to check whether their NIE number is ready so that finally they can come and pick it up – if accepted. As we mentioned earlier, there is no problem for citizens from the European Community, but there is always a long procedure that many times ends in a refusal for citizens from a state which does not belong to the European Union.

We are the NIE-Number specialists, so it makes no difference for us whether our client is from Germany, UK, Sweden, America, Pakistan, Israel, Australia or any other country. We don’t even need you to come to Spain. We arrange everything through a Power of Attorney which you sign at the Spanish embassy or consulate of our country. And don’t worry, you tell us in which country you are, and we arrange everything with the nearest Spanish embassy or consulate. We elaborate the text for the Power of Attorney, which will be printed in the official paper of the Spanish embassy, and this official document enables our office to apply for the NIE number at any Spanish National Police Station and sign any documents necessary to obtain your NIE number. You only have to pop in the nearest Spanish embassy when everything is prepared, and sign at the notary services of the Spanish embassy. The embassy itself will also provide us notary sized copies of your passport, so you don’t have to send us your originals. Afterwards, you send us the Power of Attorney to us (best and safest by post) and once we receive the documents at our office you will obtain your NIE number at the same day if we receive the documents before 11:00. Otherwise you will have it the next day.

It is important to point that a NIE number is not a Residence Permit. It is just a registration Number for foreigners, but nevertheless, it is the first step: a legal document bringing you closer to the resident status if you are a citizen from outside the EU.

Which, by the way, is also a service that we offer: If you are a non-European citizen, then we can help you to obtain a Spanish residence permit – “residencia”. At the moment, there are only two reliable ways to obtain a Spanish residence permit. The first one is a Student permit: if you have been accepted by a Spanish university. The alternative is: when you are a business man or women. In this particular case we can offer you a special agreement of the Spanish foreign department. If you have your own Spanish company (and this we can arrange everything even if you are not in Spain) then we can apply for a self employed visa/residence, which will be valid for one year. But it is compulsory that the first application for such a self employed residence is applied at the Spanish embassy or consulate of your country.

And there, you have to prove that you have enough savings for living in Spain, and that your business is able to pay the salaries and maintain the costs of your stay in Spain. We are experienced in obtaining, through the registration of a Spanish company, a Spanish residence for our clients, but each case is different and we must evaluate each one. But one thing is for sure: You need to have a minimum amount of savings of 80.000 € per person. If you can’t prove this to the Foreigners Department, your application will be denied and they will not give you the permit to travel to Spain in order to take care personally of your Spanish business.

Is there any chance of obtaining the NIE without being in Spain?

Yes! We are able to arrange everything through a Power of Attorney signed by the Spanish embassy or consulate of your country. You tell us in what country you are at the moment and we arrange everything with the Spanish embassy of this country. We prepare the text for the Power of Attorney, in where you authorize one of our staff members to represent you at the Spanish Foreign Office, to apply for the NIE number and to pick up the NIE certificate once it has been issued.

In this case, you have to keep in mind that most embassies only offer the notary service once or twice a week; therefore, it can take 2 weeks until they give you an appointment in where you have to be present -with your valid passport- and sign the authorization. The next step is easier: you post us the documents and once we have the NIE authorization in our hands, we will be able to send you back your NIE certificate by mail, and email you first of all a scanned copy.

 What happens when I lose my NIE?

If it happens, we also can help you out and arrange a new NIE certificate, in where we even have the chance to actualize it in the foreign register in case you did change your address during the past years. This service has the same price, for it is the same procedure.

I am in Spain right now, but my Visa is expired.
In case that you are at the moment in Spain, it is very important that you have a valid tourist Visa, so that your situation in Spain is legal. In the opposite case, -you are not legal in Spain at the moment- the situation is much more complicated, but not impossible. Depending on each situation, there will be alternative ways for us to obtain the NIE for you, but therefore you must contact us, so that we can look after your particular situation and arrange everything as fast as possible.

For what particular case do I need a Spanish NIE number?
In any case: if you are planning to live in Spain or to do any kind of business in Spain, you need to obtain your own NIE certificate.

Real Estate:

• Whenever you want to buy or sell a house in Spain, an apartment or any other real estate property
• When you want to sign a mortgage

Procedures at your local Town Council:

• If you want to register your address at the Town Council and obtain a “Certificado de Empadronamiento” you will need a NIE Number to fill in the application form
• If you want to pay the taxes of your properties
• Your want to pay the vehicle taxes
• You want to apply for a construction license for your property
• You want to apply for an opening license for your business (bar, restaurant, etc.)
• You want to obtain the social security card
• You want to apply at the court for a lawyer paid by the state

Social Security

• To obtain a social security number and be affiliate to the Spanish social security number, you must have a Spanish NIE number.
• You also need a NIE number if you want to apply for the Spanish Unemployment Office, the INEM
• If you are receiving from another European Union country any help for unemployment, you can apply to pass this rights to Spain, but for this procedure you must have a NIE number too.

Financial procedures

• Whenever you need to open a bank account in Spain, you will be asked for your NIE number
• You will need it too if you want to do business in Spain and you want to register your own Spanish company.
• And you will also need it when filling in any tax declaration in Spain
